Young should be given space in the museum. To be able to reach out to more young people and get them involved in the museum a co-operation with the youth center “Ungdomssatsningen” in Göteborg was set up. Ungdomssatsningen builds on young peoples own initiatives, with their own creativity in focus. The target group is young between 16 – 20 years. The collaboration has so far resulted in two temporary exhibitions Overbored in 2007, and What is Going on by the Water in 2008.

Shoreline gives an opportunity for young to produce and exhibit today’s cultural expressions on a professional arena. Part of the material will be included in the upcoming permanent exhibition “City by the water” that put focus on Göteborg as being a port city. The exhibition opens in January - February 2010-2011.

Shoreline opens up a new meeting ground between the museum and its audience. The museum gains the opportunity to take part of personal experiences on what it is like living in a port city. The young are challenged to increase their understanding of their own city as well as of other conditions in different port cities. For young people living in port cities what is similar, what is different, what kind of opportunities and limitations can be found? In today’s globalized and online connected world can we from a sense of place get perspective on ourselves and gain extended understanding for others?

The Maritime Museum wants to invite the audience to participate and engage in the activities taking place at the museum. Since 2007 the museum has worked active with strategic audience development. This project is supported by the Swedish Art council.
